Distabling worlds

Practices for resituating otherwise

The practice of design is experiencing a momentum of self-criticality, questioning its western colonial roots and its preservation of the neoliberal extractive-based status quo. This raises ethical and political concerns about our ways of being in practice. It necessitates exploring alternative positions to challenge our modes of knowing and their implications for us as practitioners.

This reflexive and making-based workshop explore possible paths for resituating in different ontological places. For that it brings the Mesoamerican concept of Cosmovision, a cultural group's worldview integrating rational and spiritual beliefs with practice. Cosmovision is proposed as a space for personal and collective reflexivity around the multiple worlds that inhabit us, impacting our ways of being and thinking.

This activity is conducted by Andres Ortega, a Chilean design practitioner and doctoral researcher now based in Naarm (Melbourne).
